All true Bible students will know that back at the beginning book of the Bible, where the creation account is given, you do not have to read very far until you will find these words; “God said”, in the NKJV. Gen 1:3 “Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light.”
So as you go through the first chapter of Genesis, you will find a few places that reminds us that “GOD SAID” or did something — and then some more of the re-creation came into being. (Ps 104:30 “You send forth Your Spirit, they are created; and You renew the face of the earth.)
Let us move on into Gen.2 and note this creating of what was later to be announced to Israel as the 4th Commandment, even though it was the first one of the ten, given to man. Once again we find God did something to bring this command into being, so it is a part of and the completion actually, of creation. No man had anything to do with this being brought about—it was done for man and by God. (Mark 2:27-28) It is not a day that man can decide for himself about, and there are actually several things to consider from these early passages of Scripture. Let us read it here from the beginning, as we see the close of creation week in Scripture;
Gen 2:2-3 “And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, (set it apart as Holy) because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.” (NKJ) So as anyone can see, this was commanded by God at creation and therefore “GOD SAID” for man to rest on the seventh day of the week and that has never been changed anywhere in Scripture. Christ, who was the God that worked with Israel (1Chron.17:24 & Isa.45:15) actually issued this statement! (See also—John1:1-3) While in the human flesh, Christ also kept the seventh day Sabbath as Holy Time, the way God (OT:430 'elohiym (el-o-heem') intended from the beginning.
(See the study on “SANTIFIED TIME” for more.)
So when we come to this day, every week and at the setting of the sun on “Friday” (Gen.1:5 & Lev 23:32) we are entering into Holy Time! The time GOD SAID would be Holy because He made it to be that way, so are you listening to what God Said concerning this 4th Commandment? But what does man normally do? Most usually the opposite of what God says. However, let us briefly go back again to the Garden of Eden to see this pattern being established in the minds of the first humans ever created. Let us hypothesize, as many do and have done down through time about what went on here, from what we are given in Scripture. You may want to check the entire story flow in your own Bible—but to save space I am going to paraphrase a possible scenario; God creates man, Adam—in the beginning of the 6th day. (and that is another thing the verses above from Gen. brings out—the weekly cycle pattern was also being set as part of creation—the seven day week, which has also never been changed. Sunday is still the first day of the week.)
We are assuming this was very early in the day and God took the newly created man to view and name all of the animals as they passed before him. The majority of creation is already done at this point of the story. Adam was alone—the only human in existence at that time. (Gen.3:20) God instructed (God said to) Adam how to live and even to have a relationship with God that no animal was given. He alone was given the ability to think and reason and a spirit component was placed in him that gave him free moral agency, or the freedom to choose. God created the man and deliberately put him in a circumstance where he would have to immediately begin to make choices in a process of learning. He was commanded to eat from fruit trees that included the tree of life (Which bore fruit all year round—Ezekiel 47:12) there in the garden—but not to take of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. This was to test his willingness to obey and to keep them from knowledge they were not yet able to handle, without eating of the tree of life first and establishing a pattern of obedience.
Then God creates Eve later, possibly toward the end of the day, to be Adams partner for life and for the fact of reproduction in the human realm. They were given this beautiful Garden to live in and keep and now all that is left is the creation of the Sabbath—AND for them to choose to obey God in what He had said! So the Sabbath came and went and as yet man had not taken of the tree of life—but they had that first Sabbath to learn to love and explore each other, as well as many other things and to contemplate what God had told them. Everything was new to them, though they were not created in a neutral state as little children are born today, Adam had already been following the direction of obeying God and doing as he was directed. (Read the context of chapter 2.) God created them to rule with the government of God and they were created in a very mature and fully developed state, both in body and in mind.
As our hypothesizing goes on; the Sabbath now is over and a new week is beginning and it is very possible that this is where the serpent comes on the scene to tempt them, being spirit and knowing their purpose and that they have not yet eaten of the tree of life; had not made the decision in that respect to give them the spiritual strength the tree of life would have given them. So in this we can see Satan takes advantage of that. He deceives Eve as you read in the 3rd chapter and they then lost the opportunity to eat of the tree of life or even be in the garden anymore, because they disobeyed and fell into sin and the captivity of Satan; in a nut shell explanation.
So IF this took place on the first day of the week, (as we have hypothesized) it could very well explain why it is the first day of the week that false Christianity claims as its Sabbath. (2Cor.11:14-15) If it is the day that the devil became the God of this world (2Cor.4:4 & 2Tim.2:26) and convinced man to disobey what GOD SAID, it makes sense he would deceive the ancient world even about the Sabbath, changing that day of worship to honor him as the god of this world. He still does that and even tries to re-claim as captives the true converts, all down through time. (Rev.12:9-10) He is constantly attacking the true COG, those who still strive to obey what God Said in resisting Satan, will cling to the correct knowledge of creation and the 4th Commandment!
The wording of the 4th command is also unique, but understandable as being the first of the ten commands given. Exo.20:8-11 "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. (no one could remember something that was not already in existence) 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.” (NKJ)
It included the keeping of the Sabbath command when Peter and the apostles said; "We ought to obey God rather than men.” (Acts 5:29) and also when James said (James 2:10) “For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble (or choose to disobey) in one point, he is guilty of all.” This requires true and heart-felt Repentance to receive reconciliation when one of these laws are broken, which the majority of those who claim “Christianity” do not known they are violating, if they have never been taught the truth about the seventh day Sabbath.
You can have a spiritually enriched life and find many spiritual blessings in doing so, when you decide to obey what God said by keeping the 4th commandment. However, in this world and age of man under the captivity and swaying influence of Satan (Eph.2:2) one has to be very diligent to study God’s word and resist any cunning temptation used to sway us. We must go to God in prayer for understanding and let the Holy Spirit guide us to see what HE says about every aspect of life. Have a Spiritual life by believing and obeying what “God Said” in the 4th command! I hope you, my friends, are really listening?
