Committed to truth

(A modified transcript of an audio, now used as article on tcogmso)

Commitment is one of the four C’s of true Christianity, but very few people are really that committed to living by those. Where do you fit and how committed to truth are you?

In this article, we want to explore what the Scriptures indicate that true Christians should have as far as commitment to truth. Prepared for audio before Pentecost of 2011, this is now being transferred to an article for the purpose of continuing this information for study and meditation purposes for the readers and listeners on this website. Christ has warned the COG even today about the leaven of the Pharisees (doctrine or teaching of), so this is for the benefit of those who seek truth and will not settle for less.

So to get started, in three of the Gospel accounts, Matthew, Mark and Luke, we find recorded for us the mindset of the Pharisees and how they were resistant to truth, constantly trying to trip Christ up so they could discredit Him. Christ had stated that many are called but few are chosen and this is the very next verse; Matt 22:15 says “Then the Pharisees went and plotted how they might entangle Him in His talk.” The next verse shows they knew He was from God and taught the way of God in truth! —let us notice that; V.16 And they sent to Him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that You are true, and teach the way of God in truth;” (NKJ)

So here we see this acknowledgment, but they would not commit themselves to believing and accepting all aspects of that truth. Are there some like this today, even in the COG groups? As we approach Pentecost this year; how committed to the truth are we?  As true Christians at any time of year, don’t we have to be “committed to truth” to be in the first resurrection? Are any of use today like these Pharisees and just don’t realize it? Can we (you and I) spot false prophets that may be among COG people? How about members that will only go so far in applying the truth in their lives? We are in the era of lukewarm-ness and compromises but we are not forced to be that way. Have we been convinced of things by someone else or are we committed to getting the truth from the word of God?

We have a very wonderful example of how we are supposed to be, as followers of Christ. We should be like those in Berea who were “fair-minded” enough to readily hear the Biblical words expounded—but we are also to be studious as they were and on a daily basis (Also shown-Acts 17:11) to prove out the truth of a matter for ourselves from the Scriptures. Even in sermons that we hear, as the Bereans did, we are told to test all things and hold fast that which is good. Many today are just too busy with other things, to do that. Of course we need the Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth as John 16:13 shows and we should be praying for that to happen. Christ explained in John 4:23-24 how we should worship in Spirit and truth and that the Father is seeking those who will worship Him that way.

So how “committed to Truth” are we? Are we open enough in our minds that we can readily accept the word of God as truth when it is presented—and then go home and study it out even more thoroughly on our own with a desire to learn, so that there is no doubt about it, left in our minds? We have to have a great amount of love for the truth and a desire to know that we know it, or we will not spend much effort on it. We will tend to take someone else’s word for it and they could be wrong or even mistaken in some areas. Didn’t Paul say we are to keep the feast of unleavened bread with sincerity and TRUTH? What does that mean? Many, even in the COG today, just don’t spend the time to search out and study a matter long enough to prove to themselves the full truth of it. It is easier to rely on someone else to reveal the truth on whatever the subject may be. But what normally happens if we don’t love the truth enough to work for it ourselves? We will be tested and most likely fail; being pulled into someone else’s version of the truth on that particular subject. We have to prove the truth with commitment and then hold onto it once we have proved it, never to let anyone take that from us. By doing this, we will also learn who we can rely on to do the same thing, even in the ministry.

We are in a time frame today where there are a lot of different ideas being taught as to what the truth is on various subjects; such as the Gospel or “different gospels” or a watered down version of truth in that area, and many other doctrines as well. Is government important or even a doctrine for the COG—how to tithe according to the bible—what to believe about fulfillment of certain prophecies—whether there are really church eras—where we are in time according to that and who goes to a place of safety and so on! How committed to the truth of Scripture are we, or are we like the Pharisees who unwittingly blocked out much of the truth in preference to their own understanding of Scripture. They also had their followers too, or have some of us forgotten that? Christ spoke of a time of Lawless-ness when love (For truth—as well as each other) would grow cold and if we are not alert, that will affect us and cause us to lose our crown! Paul said the mystery of Lawless-ness was already at work in his time and so it is always lurking, waiting to pull someone else in, to destroy any commitment to truth that may be in them. So many today just do not see how this has already affected them to the point of blocking the truth of some point right out of their minds! They can no longer see it as it was once taught and proven!

Turn in your Bible, with me to II Thes. 2: and let us read verses 9-12  (NKJ & RSV) V.9 “The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, (which is rendered “falsehoods” by some Bible helps, with the added note of it being from Satan through human instruments.) V.10 and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, (Why were they to perish?)because they did not receive (or hold fast to—were not committed to) the love of the truth, that they might be saved.” (Once they found the truth, they had not committed themselves to holding onto it, so they were deceived by falsehoods.)  reading  V.11 From the RSV; “Therefore God sends upon them a strong delusion, to make them believe what is false,” –and brethren that is absolutely happening today on a far greater scale than the majority seem to realize! Is it happening to you or me, and are we alert enough to know? What happens to those who succumb to this? V.12 ”that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness. We have to be committed to truth and also love that truth, if we are going to be in the family of God as the first fruits! What effort are we putting into knowing the truth on any given subject and then being committed to hold that fast?

The Pharisees were not committed to truth except by their own understanding of it, their minds were not open to the truth of Christ’s words, so how could they be committed to it. They were not answering their calling and were more committed to themselves and their own understanding, just as some in the COG are today. Some, having compromised with the truth in their mind, can no longer understand what the truth is on certain things, just like the Pharisees. Christ tells them and us that it is the truth that will make us free. However the majority of those Pharisees could not understand because the influence they had willingly let into their minds was blocking out the truth. They had a mind blockage and that blockage was caused by their own mind’s resistance to believe the truth. Turn to John 8. Here we see a discourse between Christ and these Pharisees; Christ told them and showed who He was and some of them did not ever accept that and still do not today. At one point here, they even state; “who are you”? Christ had just told them and they didn’t believe it was true; So He basically said “I have been telling you the truth and you did not believe me. And in V. 43 (RSV) he explains why; “Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word.” (Some today do not want the truth to be the truth anymore, because it would show they are wrong and need to repent, so they chose to believe a lie on some point of truth instead, in order to stay in a comfort zone! The mark of a true Christian is being willing to take correction, from truth in Scripture, instead of arguing their view that does not agree with (ALL) Scripture on that subject. Some even in the office of ministry do this, which comes from the influence of a wrong spirit;) V.44 “You are of your father the devil,--(Satan’s influence is blocking the truth from your minds --- Christ is saying by His words) “he--has nothing to do with the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”  (His agents are very subtle today and do the same thing, however sometimes in ignorance.)

How about those who produce lies today so they can continue to have a following and claim to be the COG? (Oh they will be clever enough to mix a lot of truth with a little falsehood, enough truth to pull you in!) Does it really matter if ministers lie to us about points of doctrine or what Scripture reveals?  Some don’t think so but it does if we want to be committed to truth. V.45 “But, because I tell the truth, (Christ said) you do not believe me.” How often does this happen to true servants of Christ today when trying to accurately explain the truth? Most in the world and sad to say, some in the COG realm are reluctant to even study into something their leaders or organizations are teaching falsely, to determine what the truth of the matter is. They just assume the leader is right, which amounts to following men instead of God! We should all be willing to grow in understanding and be corrected by Scripture, to be committed to the truth, if we expect to be the first fruits of God’s Family. There are no contradictions in the original writings of the Bible—so we have to let the clear Scriptures interpret the unclear, while “rightly dividing the word of truth”. (2 Tim 2:15-NKJ) So there is a right way and a wrong way, with NO middle ground.

So in conclusion, we are also told we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, (Which, if you have ever watched a leaf being blown in a gentle wind, you will know that means being Variable, up & down, back & forth, erratic or inconsistent and unpredictable.) How stable are you when it comes to knowing the truth and holding it fast? Does your commitment stay firm under pressure? The first fruits are not compromisers and deceitful men & women, having committed themselves to proven truth’s of the Bible and then holding them fast, while continuing to grow in Spiritual understanding. They will also be trying to help others avoid the Leaven of the Pharisees, deceitfulness of some who claim to be Christian, that we see even in the COG organizations of today. (Rev. 3:9) Are you prepared to expose heresy or wrong teachings? (Eph.5:11) THIS IS LAODICEA and repentance and reclaiming a zeal for the truth is required if you want to be in the first resurrection, (Rev.3:19) so how committed to truth are you in your life?
